Mathematical logic through Python.Yannai A. Gonczarowski - 2022 - New York, NY: Cambridge University Press. Edited by Noam Nisan.
An introduction to Mathematical Logic using a unique pedagogical approach in which the students implement the underlying conceps as well as almost all the mathematical proofs in the Python programming language. The textbook is accompanied by an extensive collection of programming tasks, code skeletons, and unit tests. The covered mathematical material includes Propositional Logic and first-order Predicate Logic, culminating in a proof of Gödel's Completeness Theorem. A "sneak peak" into Gödel's Incompleteness Theorem is also provided.

“On This Day, We Are Perfect”: Embodiment in Yannai’s Yom Kippur Qerova.Laura S. Lieber - 2022 - Journal of Jewish Thought and Philosophy 30 (1):37-69.
This article analyzes two poetic units within a much longer composition composed by Yannai for recitation on Yom Kippur. Specifically, it offers readings of Unit 8, which prefaces the third blessing of the Amidah, and Unit 15, which concludes the work. Both units dwell on the physical experience of Yom Kippur and the ways in which ritual affects the body, permitting us to consider the role of “kinesthetic theology” – i.e., how physical expression and embodied experiences not only reflect (...)

Portraits of Righteousness: Noah in Early Christian and Jewish Hymnography.Laura Lieber - 2009 - Zeitschrift für Religions- Und Geistesgeschichte 61 (4):332-355.
The transformation of Noah into a Christian ideal in the writings of Aphrahat and Ephrem, with the resulting denigration of Noah in much rabbinic exegesis, is well documented. The purpose of this essay is to examine the characterization of Noah in the liturgical setting. Four groups of works are examined: the Hebrew Avodah poems and the hymns of Ephrem the Syrian ; and the kontakia of Romanos the Melodist and the liturgical poems of the Jewish poet Yannai. These sources (...)

Open peer commentary on the article “Constructing Constructivism” by Hugh Gash. Upshot: The concept of “constructivist teaching” seems unattainable for two reasons: a philosophical and an empirical one. Also, Hugh Gash’s survey is not so much about radical constructivism in education, but a review of different connected ideas labeled “constructivism” that have dominated the educational field.

    Spirituality and nursing: A reductionist approach.M. A. Paley - 2008 - Nursing Philosophy 9 (1):3–18.
The vast majority of contributions to the literature on spirituality in nursing make extravagant claims about transcendence, eternity, the numinous, higher powers, higher levels of existence, invisible forces, cosmic unity, the essence of humanity, or other supernatural concepts. Typically, these assertions are made without the support of argument or evidence; and, as a consequence, alternative ways of theorizing ‘spirituality’ have been closed off, while the lack of consistent scholarship has turned the topic into a metaphysical backwater. In this paper, I (...)

    A psychological theory of reasoning as logical evidence: a Piagetian perspective.M. A. Winstanley - 2021 - Synthese 199 (3-4):10077-10108.
Many contemporary logicians acknowledge a plurality of logical theories and accept that theory choice is in part motivated by logical evidence. However, just as there is no agreement on logical theories, there is also no consensus on what constitutes logical evidence. In this paper, I outline Jean Piaget’s psychological theory of reasoning and show how he used it to diagnose and solve one of the paradoxes of material implication. I assess Piaget’s use of psychology as a source of evidence for (...)

Does the French Bioethics Law create a 'moral exception' to the use of human cells for health? A legal and organizational issue.A. Mahalatchimy, E. Rial-Sebbag, V. Tournay & A. Faulkner - 2011 - Dilemata 7:17-37.
This article focuses on the legal and organisational regulation of human cells in the United Kingdom and France. French Bioethics Law regulates human cells for health according to European Union law where it is enforceable. But products unregulated by EU law and based on human cells are never considered as medicinal products, given the strict implementation of the principle of “nonpatrimonialité” of the human body and its elements. By comparison, in the UK such products can be qualified as medicinal products. (...)

Democracy as Culture: Deweyan Pragmatism in a Globalized World.Emil Višňovský - 2010 - Transactions of the Charles S. Peirce Society 46 (2).
The issue of democracy is alive once more. There is a growing number of works debating the current state of democracy both in theory and practice.1 In particular a pragmatist conception of democracy has also been revived. Not only has a Deweyan version of a participatory democracy become the focus but the intricacies of a Rortian version have also come to the forefront, from both sympathetic as well as critical viewpoints.2 Thus the impression that the contemporary world is in quite (...)

    Panentheism and the Classical God-World Relationship: A Systems-Oriented Approach.S. J. Joseph A. Bracken - 2015 - American Journal of Theology and Philosophy 36 (3):207-225.
Panentheism has become a familiar term in contemporary Christian systematic theology and philosophy, for it is widely believed to be an appropriate way to overcome the alleged dualism found in the classical God-world relationship. But what is meant by the term panentheism, and how does it work so as to avoid becoming still another form of pantheism or cosmic monism? In 2004 Philip Clayton and the late Arthur Peacocke published a set of papers on the topic of panentheism that came (...)

Descartes and Method: A Search for a Method in Meditations.Clarence A. Bonnen & Daniel E. Flage - 1999 - New York: Routledge. Edited by Clarence A. Bonnen.
Rene Descartes credited his success in philosophy, mathematics, and physics to the discovery of a universal method of inquiry, but he provided no systematic description of his method. _Descartes and Method_ carefully examines Descartes' scattered remarks on his application and puts forward a systematic account of his method with particular attention to the role it plays in the _Meditations_. Daniel E. Flage and Clarence A. Bonnen boldly and convincingly argue against the orthodox conception that Descartes had no method. Through a (...)

    Towards a Biosemiotic Theory of Evolution.Alexei A. Sharov - 2021 - Biosemiotics 14 (1):101-105.
The target article by Denis Noble is an excellent overview of the illusions of the Modern Synthesis that still remains in textbooks despite of the recent criticism. Overcoming these illusions shows the active role of organisms in the evolutionary process and accounts for additional mechanisms such as plasticity of embryo development, epigenetic heredity, multilevel selection, Baldwin effect, and niche construction, which are components of the Extended Evolutionary Synthesis. Adding these mechanisms is certainly an important step forward, but I argue that (...)
